Mary I. O’Connor, MD is a nationally recognized leader for health equity. Since its inception in 2010, she has chaired the Movement is Life Caucus, a multi-stakeholder coalition committed to addressing musculoskeletal health disparities. In February of 2021, Dr. O’Connor transitioned from academic medicine to serve as co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Voya Health, a musculoskeletal medical startup company committed to innovative, integrated, patient-centered, and value-driven equitable care.

Dr. O’Connor is a Professor Emerita of orthopedics at Mayo Clinic and past Professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine. She received her MD from Drexel University and completed her residency in orthopedics and fellowship in orthopedic oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She practiced at Mayo Clinic in Florida until 2015 during which time she served in many leadership roles: Enterprise-wide Medical Director of Compliance; Chair, Orthopedic Surgery Department; Medical Director for Development; and member of the Executive Operations Team. In 2015 she became the inaugural Director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Care at Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Health.

Dr. O’Connor has published extensively on orthopedic oncology and arthroplasty related topics with particular areas of interest including limb salvage in the management of sarcomas involving the pelvic and shoulder girdles, gender differences in outcomes related to joint replacement surgery, sex difference in knee osteoarthritis and use of stem cells to potentially treat osteoarthritis. Dr. O’Connor’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, and the Journal of Arthroplasty.

Dr. O'Connor was the first female member of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS), the International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS), the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) and The Knee Society. She is the Past President of the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeon, AAHKS, ISOLS, MSTS and the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society. She is past member of the Advisory Committee on Research on Women's Health at NIH. Dr. O'Connor has long championed diversity and inclusion in the orthopaedic profession as Chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery Diversity Advisory Board, Women’s Health Issues Advisory Board, and founding member of the AAHKS Women in Arthroplasty Group and member of the AAHKS Diversity Advisory Board.

Dr. O’Connor has received numerous awards and honors during her training and career, including being named a Distinguished Clinician at Mayo Clinic and receiving The Corinne Farrell Award from the International Skeletal Society in 2009. She received the Congressional Gold Medal as a 1980 Olympian (Women’s Rowing).

In November 2020, Dr. O’Connor’s TEDx talk, “Promoting Health – Your Secret Superpower” highlighted the Movement is Life Operation Change program and the privilege and responsibility for each individual to be a health promoter for those around them. As a featured speaker at the July 2018 New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst event, Dr. O’Connor highlighted the power of teams in addressing health disparities, “Title IX to Health Equity: The Power of Teams”.

Ingrid Adaeze Okonta, MS, is a medical student at the University of Louisville School of Medicine (UL SOM). She was born in Brooklyn, New York, but her hometown is Atlanta, Georgia. She earned her bachelor's degree in Biology at Georgia State University and then pursued a Masters in Biology at Georgia State University and a Masters in the Science of Healthcare Delivery at Arizona State University. Ingrid is passionate about Diversity and Inclusion efforts in medicine, public policy and health equity research. She has served as a student development assistant for the Summer Health Profession Educational Program (SHPEP) at the UL SOM program site. In addition, Ingrid has worked together with the admissions department at UL SOM on URM recruitment efforts. She serves as UL SOM Student National Medical Association MAPS/LSAMP Liaison, Student Representative on the UL SOM Anti-Racism Task Force, and a J. Robert Gladden Orthopedic Society Social Media Task Force intern. Ingrid is an aspiring Orthopedic surgeon, who loves outdoor activities, meditation, traveling, working on DIY projects, and cooking spicy authentic “Nigerian delicacies”.

I'm a board certified orthopedic surgeon practicing in Fairfax, VA, where I own and operate a solo hand surgery practice. As an African-American woman, I'm passionate about increasing diversity in orthopedics.

I’m currently a third year orthopaedic surgery resident at the University of Missouri. I have an interest in advancing the field through research and improving the diversity of our field.

I have been on faculty at Oregon Health and Science University since 1999. I am a professor and the quality medical director for my department. I am a past-president of the Oregon Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Oregon Medical Association. I previously served as chair of the AAOS Board of Councilors and the Membership and Leadership Development Committee and as a past member of the Board of Directors. I currently serve as the interim editor-in-chief of AAOS Now.
