About Me

I was born in Memphis, raised in Memphis, and attended the University of Memphis for my undergraduate education (Class of 2018). I then went on to complete my Master’s degree in Pharmacology here in Memphis at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in 2020, then matriculated with the UTHSC College of Medicine Class of 2025.

As a former lifelong cheerleader, I sustained injuries resulting in countless visits to an orthopaedic surgeon. In every case, I was seen by a male who found difficulty in relating to the sport of cheerleading. As a young Filipino American girl at that time, I felt different. I vividly remember feeling intimidated as I was surrounded by men while sitting on the exam table. My ankle injury seemed invalid. I felt less important, and not deserving of treatment. This experience, however, transcends me, as well as the sport of cheerleading. Core to this is a need for more women in the field of orthopaedic medicine.

I choose orthopaedic medicine to be an advocate for the women and girls who struggled with feeling believed and validated, just as I did. As a woman, and member of a demographic group historically underrepresented in medicine, I can use my background and experiences as a Filipino American woman to deeply empathize with patients, and strive toward a more fair, equal field of orthopaedic medicine. My goal is to ensure that future students pursing orthopaedic medicine, as well as our own patients, who come from various backgrounds possessing various strengths, feel represented. It is through representation and an unconditional passion for healing that patients and their families will feel more connected to us.

Volunteering at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and working with families from around the world reinforced the importance of respecting cultural diversity. A simple, yet profound, way that I offer emotional support is by providing inpatient children and families with toys and amenities. This enables me to uplift them during a vulnerable time in their lives. While physicians are fundamentally trained to heal, we are limited in our impact if we focus only on medical diagnoses and treatments. As I look to the future, I want to pivot from this framework and challenge myself to understand how inequalities pervade our health care institutions. Being a St. Jude Volunteer has taught me that, in order to grow and improve as a physician, we must continue to address our own biases and be willing to engage in uncomfortable conversations with each other. We must advocate for a society that better addresses the inequities embedded in the structures of daily life. Only with thoughtful and consistent effort can we provide better outcomes for all patients.

My desire to pursue orthopaedics was validated during my experience with the Perry Initiative. Sharing a room with likeminded peers and successful female orthopaedic surgeons evoked emotions of gratitude and inspiration; gratitude to feel represented as a woman in medicine, but also inspired to achieve my goal of becoming an orthopaedic surgeon just like them. To hear their unique pathways, challenges and pitfalls, and the joys of their journeys instilled the confidence that I can, too, be prosperous.

About Me

I am a third year medical student at the Medical College of Georgia. I decided to pursue orthopedic as because I loved musculoskeletal anatomy and working with my hands. Within orthopedics, I plan to pursue either oncology or pediatrics. Outside of academics, I enjoy powerlifting, yoga, and music.
